Bruce Lang, 68, Pine Haven Volunteer Fire Department, died in the line of duty of a drowning accident during an emergency response. Bruce’s life of service began in the United States Army and continued as he served his community for 30 years as an EMT and volunteer firefighter. Known as a mentor, he helped guide and train new volunteers. During his 36-year career as a coal mine mechanic, Bruce served as a volunteer member of the coal mine rescue team. A staple in Pine Haven, he was described as the kindest, most amazing man with a “heart of solid gold,” always doing something for others. Remembered as a “mechanic extraordinaire” who could fix anything, he believed strongly in doing everything possible to find a solution to a problem and help. After fashioning a makeshift ambulance out of a hearse when his community was in need but could not afford one, he drove while his wife provided care. He enjoyed elk hunting, fishing, horseback riding, snowmobiling, and the peacefulness of the mountains. His most special memories were with his daughter teaching her to hunt and fish. Bruce loved spending time with the most important people in his life - his wife of 43 years, Linda, and daughter Becca. He loved his family to the “moon and back.”
